Montmorillonite/TiO2 Filler in PA1010 Matrix

This paper presents a study of the mechanical and thermal properties of injection molded samples of polyamide-1010 (PA1010) and polyamide-1010/(montmorillonite + TiO2) composite. The clay served as filler for the polymer matrix and also served as substrate for growing of TiO2 particles, whereas the resulting composite was also used as the PA1010 filler. The clay content in the PA1010 composites was varied from 0 to 8 vol.% in 5 steps. The samples were examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermal gravimetry (TG). Following mechanical properties were determined: tensile strength, impact strength and elongation. Mechanical properties showed great increase with the addition of the clay filler with the peak values for the 4 vol.% content. SEM images show that morphology of the sample with 4 vol.% content of filler is similar to that of pure polyamide. The polymer fibers are ordered and aligned. The particles of the filler were also observed on the surface. Contrary to the mechanical properties the thermal properties were not improved by the addition of the filler in any amount used in this study.
